👉Here's how I do things different when it comes to treating speech sounds and feeding skills.
Typical traditional speech or feeding therapy starts by using a behavioral approach to teach new skills and only if that "doesn't work" will the therapist start looking at possible muscle dysfunction and anatomical concerns
I believe in assessing how the bones fit together (structure) and how the muscles work (function) BEFORE having a child work on speech and feeding skills. That way I can ensure that the child CAN be successful in working towards their goals.
Too many times I've encountered kids who are completely burnt out from years and years of therapy, essentially reinforcing the idea that they're just not trying hard enough. When I do an orofacial myofunctional assessment and then explain to them WHY it's so hard for them, that it's not their fault and it's not because they haven't been trying hard enough, the look on their face is priceless. ☺️
If your child has been working on the same sound or skill for months on end without any success, it's time to switch things up, find the why, and treat the root cause👊
